The original site had only the home page indexed due to all links encased in Javascript (which search engines can't read or follow). The links were also in images further hampering indexing of the pages (search engines can't read images).
All descriptions were the same (causes a penalty in Google) and all titles were the same (causing a reduction in keyword rank).
There was several lines of spam in every spacer gif's image alt tag which could have caused the site to be penalized by Google if anyone had reported it.
The site ranked for it's business name so it wasn't banned but a search for the whole title didn't bring up the home page which was evidence of a penalty.
The site was also on shared hosting with 30,317 other websites so if even one of them were banned this one would have been also and when you realize who designed the site originally that would have been very likely:

Website Pros which took mega money claiming to get this site top ranking and practically destroyed it instead.
Original site had been online since May of 2005, i.e., 2 years. It was designed April 2007 and moved to a new host.
Traffic, keyword ranking and sales increased right after redesign.
