The original site had duplicate home pages which would have caused a major reduction in rank and using numbers for file names, affecting keyword rank also.

The owner had their original site built with Tripod's Site Builder (a freebie host). Once they set up their own domain they were erroneously told to set up a 302 redirect pointing from their old site to the new domain which effectively eliminated any possibility of ranking for this site (all keyword ranking was attributed to their original free site on Tripod).

So even though their new domain had been online for 2 years it was like starting all over with the search engines when it was redesigned 8-14-07 and the 302 redirect was removed. The site also had no backlinks pointing at the new domain so no PR (Page Rank) even though the site is 2 years old.

Google quickly picked up the new pages and eliminated the old ones (via htaccess redirects) but it may take several months for the search engines to sort out all the changes. This is still better than the site lingering in oblivion forever.
