Bearded Iris need at least 1/2 a day of full sun and planted in well drained soil to prevent the rhizome from rotting during wet winters. They prefer neutral to slightly acidic soil. If you want to divide the rhizomes wait 6-8 weeks after the blooms have faded and discard the rhizome in the center of the clump as it won't bloom next year. The top of the rhizome needs to be above ground or it will produce leaves but won't flower next year. Fertilize in late fall with bone meal or a low nitrogen fertilizer. Water sparingly during growing the season as Iris are very drought tolerant.
